El mar negro
Jorge Abbondanza

The black sea
Jorge Abbondanza
Boldness is one of the motors of
the artistic activity. When facing the
canvas, the painter dares to take a leap of faith, chasing an image that will
exist only by his mediation. Starting from zero is not an easy matter when you are
looking for that apparition. But neither is it when the writer organizes words,
so that an idea is born through a new phrase, or when the musician measures the
notes until he hangs the audible string by which it is reborn.
Javier Bassi assumes that his
artistic work begins with the search of an image, which is not always a clear
itinerary, brief or lineal. He also recognizes that due to the encounter with
that image a gradual elaboration process can open up, although sometimes the
image escapes, loosing itself in two minutes, maybe perhaps the point in which
the work reaches its ideal expression, was left behind. The same happens in
pottery, because the pressure of the fingers over the turned shape also arrives
suddenly to the fullness, and could be lost if the work does not stop
there. With the painter in front of the
image those stages are passed through, where an effect can arise or disappear
along the way, without the will that can sometimes catch it.
That flow is imponderable, but nevertheless
results decisive in the language like the one Bassi frequents, whose contact
with the image in formation can be a furtive encounter, every time more unpredictable
as well as his production advances towards a stubborn depuration, which –as he
signals- is a personal method that does not work through what it adds but from
what it takes. Starting from the enormous black surface of his works, the white
lines are an emanation that the artist will be reducing until the image sets,
as if it had to contract or dissolve in order to float accordingly over the
background. The secret of that navigation responds to an impalpable measure, a
calculus rule dictated by intuition, but it is also an act of expressive magic
difficult to trace, that will determine the wave of seduction and even the
intensity of the work..
The remarkable thing about Bassis’
work is that it does not unwrap everything he presents, imposing a mystery veil
to the result, which acts in two ways over the observer. On the one hand it
seems to detain the visual exploration, as if it only allowed advancing a bit
along the way that permits the sight to penetrate in what it sees, and on the
other hand, he irresistibly induces oneself to continue travelling through the
black sea. Perhaps because the attractiveness that holds is more powerful than
the conscious that it could not be completely unraveled. The white print that
invades the black has a dramatic quality linked to the hit of both colors,
because it also creates a tension which can only be maintained when you play
like this, with the scales’ both extremes. That is why Bassi is able to strike up that
combat between the impenetrable and the revealing, a crossroads that can be
fascinating when it depends on an artists pulse such as himself, who goes ahead
or backwards with his clues without allowing the contemplators spell to
decline.
Everything is governed by a farther
away key than the work itself, because Bassi is an individual of austerity
identical to his painting, whose conduct manifests only partly, saving reservation
zones that shade in his character and oblige us to guess what is not declared.
So then also, in some sense he works in black and white, although this
distancing does not fog his cordiality. It simply gives him a severe profile
that confuses itself with the sobriety of what he does, tracing an identification
between the author and the work, that acts as a mirror whose fidelity vitalizes
equally both appearances, the real and the projected one. The laconic man, that
when he speaks does so with a concentrated expressiveness, reflects himself in
works of the same nature, which at simple view seem to close in front of the
rest, but then open slits appear as you observe them, until acquiring a semi
light quality similar to gloominess, which embellishes the reality because it
does not reveal itself completely.
The energy charge which that painting
is able to display, runs for example through the double net that grids one of
the works (as if it doubled the protection of a content), it reappeared with
the spectral image that arises in another( the same as a materialized ectoplasm
in a state of trance), comes back with the three white lines that seem to open
the mouth of a stage (redoubling the black depth that surrounds them), it intensifies
with the eruption that breaks out in the only white background piece ( as an
unexpected negative reverse of all the rest), or accompanies the solitary line
that advanced from a border and it suddenly breaks in a vertical fall, that
weighs as if the outline were mutilated.
Solitary and quiet as a Carthusian
monk, Bassi acquires a medullar height in the Uruguayan art of these last
times, sustained by the rigor of his task. Rarely does mastery appear with so
little flattery and so much demand, barely trusted in the dry beauty of its
gesture and in the fingerprint that his stripping imposes.
